Negative Companion Pass Changes Coming?

There’s been plenty of bad news recently for Southwest loyalists, but one positive aspect has been the Companion Pass. This has been a great perk for those who fly Southwest often. Those who earn the Companion Pass can select a travel companion to accompany you on any Southwest flight for free, while only paying any taxes and fees. Those fees are generally as low as $5.60 one-way for a domestic flight.

But is the fun about to end?

A recent survey sent out from Southwest hints at possible changes for the Companion Pass. The survey mentions a new loyalty program with either 4 or 5 tiers, and only the top tier would get Companion Pass. Top tier members would also get 3 bags, 2 drinks,  and Priority Lane and more. To earn that top tier you would need  40-60 flights, or earn 90-160k points.

The second highest tier could possibly get 4 one-way Companion Pass certificates. The rest of the tiers would get nothing in terms of Companion Pass.

It’s worth noting that this is just a survey so it doesn’t mean that we will definitely see these Companion Pass changes. But with the direction Southwest is going in the last year or so and the fact that they are considering these changes at all, makes me think that it is more likely than not.

Let me know if you received this survey or what you think about these possible Southwest Companion Pass changes!
