YouTuber and epic inventor Colin Furze is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.
Furze has a tremendously successful YouTube channel with over 13 million subscribers and is also known for television appearances on Sky’s Gadget Geeks, Russell Howard’s Good News and Great British Inventions with David Jason.
He sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss his incredibly wacky and innovative car inventions, his career and how YouTube has changed since he first started over a decade ago.
Colin Furze on his favourite car invention
During his chat with the boys, Furze detailed his favourite invention involving turning a BMW 3 Series E30 into a hot tub with a BBQ grill on its rear, of which Plato wondered if he still had.
“I’ve got it, but it doesn’t work anymore because eventually the water did find its way into the electrics,” Furze replied.
“I chose an E30 cause I love E30s and I’m like, if I’m gonna do this, I want to do it to a car which I really love.
“I tried to find one which wasn’t mint, because there was no way I was gonna destroy a convertible E30 that was in good condition. So we found one that was a bit ropey and E30s although they’re quite oldish cars now and you class them as retros, they do have quite complicated wiring and there is a lot of wiring.
“I dunno if you can remember Superman III when Lex Luthor built that computer and the guy gets sucked into it with all the wires. I used to think that’s like what’s behind the dash in the E30s.
“Originally I was gonna try and pull all the wires out of the interior and then run them underneath, but I didn’t have enough time to do that, so we ended up just fibre-glassing over them, but as time’s gone on it’s (the rain) sort of crept in. And it kinds of runs (the engine), but it misses a bit. So there’s some shortening out somewhere.
“But that was a fantastic project because it just had everything, driving around with the water slopping around, Rick was leaning over the backseat trying to cook burgers and then I accelerated off and it washed the blooming lot off, it just had it all.”
